Noise levels have been noticeably reduced in urban areas in the San Francisco Bay Area (USA) during quarantine. Male white-headed zonotrichia (lat. - Zonotrichia leucophrys; song sparrows of the Passerellida family) reacted to this: they began to sing quieter and at lower frequencies. At the same time, it seemed to people that they heard birds much more clearly, the authors of the post-quarantine study note.
First, the scientists looked at how the pandemic and its associated restrictions affected the noise characteristics of urban and rural areas. They compared noise data collected in April-June 2015 and 2016 with data collected in spring 2020. It turned out that during the quarantine, the noise level in cities decreased by an average of 7 dB and approached the indicators typical for rural areas. However, outside the city, the noise background has not changed much.
