Calliope is a steam organ that uses locomotive or steamboat horns. The name of the instrument is given by the name of the ancient Greek muse Calliope.
Calliope has a loud, piercing sound and does not allow you to adjust the volume - only the pitch and duration. A typical instrument includes 32 beeps, on individual instruments their number could reach 67. Since the 1900s many calliopes were made with a mechanism for automatic sound production without the participation of the performer, modeled on a mechanical piano or organ.

Patented by Joshua Stoddard on October 9, 1855, although earlier examples of the instrument have been reported since 1832. In 1859, the instrument was shown in London, but the calliope was not widely used in Europe.
Originally intended to replace church bells, this musical instrument was most commonly used on steamboats and circuses to lure visitors. At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries. Calliopes were built on most of the river pleasure steamers in the United States, and a few such boats have survived to this day. During excursions on the surviving ships, musical numbers are performed using calliope. In particular, the steam organ was preserved on the steamship Delta Queen, launched in 1926 and now included in the register of US National Historic Monuments.
